"Although I have been a cheese monger since before most Americans knew what that meant, I am especially proud of my latest position. I am the "Cheese-ologist" for the Wine Thieves in Lafayette. Without reservation, I believe that cheese is the happiest food in the world. Furthermore, I believe that all other foods secretly wish they could be cheese.
"Cheese is simply magical - how else do you explain the beauty of good friends, gathered around a table sharing life's stories, and a simple meal of bread, cheese and wine? That's my kind of magic.
"My career began in San Francisco over 25 years ago, working for Judy and Charlie Creighton at 6th Avenue Cheese, one of the best and oldest cheese shops in the city. For four years, these two experienced purveyors became mentors to me, teaching me not only how to handle fine food and cheese, but how to embrace retail. I learned quickly that I was happiest when I could turn one of our customers onto something they had never tasted before. The look that comes over one's face when they are surprised by a wonderfully funky, creamy or pungent piece of fabulous cheese remains my single favorite aspect of this business.
"This latest chapter began when my brother, a long-time customer and fan of "the Thieves," recognized that our retail philosophies and passion were similar, but driven by different culinary gems.
